The wait is over.. Well almost. The long awaited release of Kanya, one of the most anticipated releases this year for me is almost upon us and this weekend to my utter surprise Shilton Almeida from Paul John poured me a little under the table dram with a big smile and a wink, a little confused I went in for a little sniff and I knew instantly this was rather special...
KANYA has arrived!!
So what exactly is Kanya? The description afforded by the Distillery is... “Ruled by Mercury and symbolised by the virgin, Kanya is the dignified Indian counterpart of the highly appealing Virgo, the sixth zodiac sign of the universe. With its earthy, feminine sensuousness, this deep amber expression personifies the intrinsic characteristics of the Kanya” The whisky itself has matured for 7 years in American white oak casks and has already picked up the award for “Best Asian whisky 2017” by Jim Murray.
Paul John Whisky is already shaking things up within the whisky world and this latest release will just strengthen the position they already hold as well as announce to the world that there is more superb whisky to come from this Indian distillery.
So on to the review... I was extremely lucky to be able to bring a small sample home in order to review and this sample has been taken from one of the first bottles to see the light of day and what a beautiful package it is too!! Bottled at 50% this whisky is of Natural colour and NCF.
Nose: This announces its arrival with a barrage of spices and citrus as well as a sweetness that just entices you back in. Cinnamon, fresh ginger and nutmeg all wrap themselves around exotic fruits as well as fresh citrus aromas, ripe banana and mango, then sweetness arrives with an abundance of honey and caramel and just the softest aroma of toasted oak.
Palate: An explosion of spices and oak with exotic fruits just impact your senses before the sweetness arrives with a vengeance. A little pepper note entices the cinnamon and ginger out with traces of that oak and ripe banana drizzled with honey along with a little chocolate sprinkled on top. Caramel and vanilla bring more sweetness in along with a subtle citrus peel note.
Finish: Warming spices with a delicious sweetness.
Thoughts: There is whisky and then there is WHISKY! This is of course the latter and screams quality from the minute you pour until long after you finish the dram.
Paul John Whisky just carries on astounding me with the quality they are able to turn out, from the awesome Classic select cask to the single cask #1906 and not to forget the multi award winning Peated select cask! This release will no doubt sell out fast and that won't be a surprise once you have tasted this.
Am I biased? Hell no!! Try it for yourself and tell me I am wrong...
